The OvaHerero Traditional Authority (OTA) and the Nama Traditional Leaders Association want Germany's new administration to scrap the genocide deal it entered with Namibia and restart the negotiation process. The leaders of the two groups have since submitted a request to meet the new German Foreign Minister, Annalena Baerbock. The group also launched an online petition calling for the renegotiation of the deal. Namibia and German governments announced the joint declaration on the 1904-1908 genocide, in which the latter acknowledged atrocities, apologised and pledged to fund development projects amounting to N$18 billion. OvaHerero Traditional Authority and the Nama Traditional Leaders Association feel that Germany's new centre-left leadership under chancellor Olaf Sholz is open to discussing the genocide issue inclusive of the affected communities. This is in sharp contrast to the Merkel administration's stance that negotiations be between governments representing the communities.
