Parents complain about registration fees, learners happy to be back at school

Learners across the country returned to school today after nearly two months at home. The NBC News team visited some schools to observe the return to school. Some parents and guardians escorted their bundles of joy to school, especially the first graders. Upon arrival at the school COVID-19 regulations were being observed, temperatures checked and sanitiser used with proper wearing of masks. While some parents are excited to have their children back to school, others are, however, still concerned about their safety when it comes to COVID-19. A few were still hoping to get their children registered on the opening day and others complained about paying registration fees. Reinhardt Gurirab said, "I was at different places and they do not want to accept the child without money. They requested for N$300 and said they cannot accommodate your child without it. Fabiola Ganes said, "at one primary school they are asking for N$750 for registration plus you have to buy school books and uniform. Some of us have no jobs." But the learners were pleased to be back to school. Aron Ntinda, a learner at Hage Geingob High School said, "it feels good. It has been a while and we are ready to learn and move forward. Schools were initially set to start on 11 January but the opening day was postponed to 26 January because of the second wave of COVID-19.
