The Roads Authority (RA) is calling on the public to use caution when on the roads of the ||Kharas Region because of the locust outbreak, which might be hazardous to motorists. The RA says in a media statement that the migratory insect species move in swarms over the road surface, causing potential safety issues for motorists. Very often, the RA says, motorists find themselves caught unaware of the locust swarm invasion on the road, leaving them with little choice but to drive through the swarm, killing them in the process. This leaves fatty residue on the road surface, which causes the road to become slippery and a danger to other motorists. Unfortunately, it is very difficult to predict the movement of the locusts to caution motorists on time about the slippery road surface. The RA, therefore, appeals to all members of the public travelling to and from the ||Kharas Region to adhere to the erected road signs, reduce their speed and exercise extreme caution, should they observe locusts on the road. Furthermore, motorists are requested to report any findings of locusts on the roads at pr@ra.org.na, the nearest RA Maintenance Office or the RA Facebook page (Roads Authority Namibia).
