SADC Organ Troika Chairperson Dr Geingob satisfied with the manner in which Angola elections were held

The Chairperson of the SADC Organ Troika, Dr Hage Geingob says he is satisfied with the manner in which the recently concluded general elections in Angola were held. About 14 million Angolans voted on the 24th of August. Namibia as the chair of the SADC Organ on Politics, Defence and Security led the SADC Electoral Observer Mission to Angola that has since declared the general elections as having been conducted consistent with the regional bloc's revised principles. President Geingob, in a letter to Angolan President Joao Lourenco, applauded the peaceful manner in which the candidates campaigned in the period leading up to the voting. President Lourenco and the ruling MPLA have since retained power after obtaining 51,1 percent of the vote against UNITA's 43,9 percent. President Geingob commended the incumbent Angolan leader for his stated commitment to dialogue and inclusive leadership. Lourenco's win, according to Dr Geingob, is a demonstration of the confidence Angolans have in his leadership. He says it is evident that Angolans are bestowing on the MPLA a mandate to steer the country towards further development and progress. The President's letter also recounted the support that the MPLA and Angolans, in general, offered Swapo and Namibians until the attainment of independence. It is against this background, Geingob says, that Namibia will continue to strengthen bilateral relations with Angola.
