Seaflower employees demonstrate, demand fishing quotas

More than 600 Seaflower employees held a peaceful demonstration at Walvis Bay to demand fishing quotas from the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources. The employees say they haven't been working since March and they are unable to afford the cost of living. As a result, they have been evicted from the shacks they live in while those who do part-time studies are unable to pay for their tuition. Three unions representing the workers stressed that loss of employment will force many to resort to crime and prostitution. Seaflower is a subsidiary of Fishcor and as per the Government Gazette number 6307, dated 15 May, it is supposed to be allocated a 50 000 ton quota per year for 15 years. However, only 15 000 ton were allocated to the company this year, putting many workers at risk of losing their jobs by 1 August. The company explained that workers have to be laid off because they did not receive a big enough quota this year.
