South Africa has announced that they have received an extradition request from Namibia for Maren de Klerk to stand trial in the ongoing Fishrot corruption case. A statement issued today by SA's Ministry of Justice says that they have received a request for De Klerk's extradition on 15 October 2021. De Klerk, a lawyer by profession, is accused of using his trust account for the distribution of the allegedly ill-gotten loot to various accounts of the accused in the Fishrot corruption trial. Just last week, one of the accused, Tamson Hatuikilipi claimed that no extradition was sought for De Klerk from South Africa and other accused in Iceland. Hatuikilipi said that the failure to extradite the other accused to foreign jurisdictions may prolong the trial, whose starting date is still to be decided. Charges against De Klerk range from racketeering, conspiracy to commit an offence, fraud, theft, money laundering and acquisition, possession, or use of proceeds of unlawful activities. The extradition request, the statement says, has been forwarded to Interpol and the National Prosecuting Authority in SA to execute. Interpol has also applied for a warrant of arrest and De Klerk's current whereabouts are being tracked by the investigating officer.
