Suspects arrested in Rhino poaching at Etosha National Park

Police in the Oshikoto Region arrested two suspects in the Etosha National Park for the alleged poaching of Rhinos yesterday. Oshikoto Regional Police Commander Commissioner Armas Shivute said the arrest was made after an anti-poaching operation which was deployed at Acacia patrol camp, situated some eight kilometres inside the park, heard gunshots a few kilometres from their camp. The team then called for police reinforcement and immediately pursued the suspects, who fled the scene leaving behind their backpacks which contained food items, live ammunition, telescopes, and clothing. Commissioner Shivute says a police officer and a suspected poacher were injured during crossfire that ensued between the two groups, and are now hospitalised at the Omuthiya and Oshakati hospitals. Three suspects remain at large.
