Trade unions called to join hands

Trade unions must join hands to address the issues of unfair labour practices, victimisation and intimidation of employees in the country as a united force, instead of doing this in isolation. This was the call by the Mining, Metal, Maritime and Construction Workers Union (MMMC), Regional Coordinator Immanuel Shafodino Festus. Speaking at a media conference on Monday Festus pointed out that the union, through its mother body the Namibia National Labour Organization, NANLO, wrote to the NUNW, TUCNA and other unions inviting them to form a Joint Commission on Wages and Employment Conditions in the fishing industry. Immanuel says the current proposed national minimum wage will not resolve salary imbalances and improve conditions of employment for fishermen, as some companies could take advantage of it to underpay their workers by claiming to be in compliance with the national minimum wages. He, therefore, called for a sectoral-based collective agreement as the only solution to address this matter. Festus further expressed his union's support for the employees of Cheetah Cement factory, who are currently on strike, and TransNamibt, who are planning to embark on industrial action. The media briefing was held to update the nation on some of the activities that are happening at the MMMC.
