A 43-year-old traffic officer of the Otjiwarongo Municipality appeared in court on Wednesday for corruption after he allegedly received and kept N$300 for a traffic fine he was supposed to issue to a motorist. Steve Biko Hoeseb made a brief appearance before the Otjiwarongo Magistrate, Karel Muyeghu, after being arrested by officials of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC). It is alleged that Hoeseb on 20 September this year stopped a motorist on the B1 road some 40 kilometres north of Otjiwarongo with an intention to issue him a traffic fine of N$300. The court was told that after he allegedly received the N$300 traffic fine from the motorist, he failed to issue the traffic fine invoice, and instead kept the money for himself. The incident was reported to the ACC at the town and Hoeseb was placed under investigation until his arrest Wednesday morning. Hoeseb opted to represent himself in court and was granted bail of N$3 000. His case was postponed to 19 January next year, for further police investigations. Prosecutor Joas Neemwatja represented the State in the matter.
