Truck drivers allegedly break out of quarantine facility

The Namibian Police Force (NamPol) in Khomas Region on Tuesday announced that two truck drivers snuck out of quarantine facilities over the weekend between Brakwater and Mix informal settlement. The announcement was made by NamPol's Khomas Commissioner, Joseph Shikongo, on Tuesday during a media briefing that took place at the Windhoek Central Police Station. Shikongo said ever since a truck driver who tested positive for Coronavirus was reported to have snuck out of a quarantine facility in Walvis Bay and went into the community last week, the police have increased surveillance operations in quarantine facilities and noticed that truck drivers made up the majority of offenders. He said the two truck drivers who snuck out of the quarantine facility in Khomas have been apprehended. They were found in the informal settlements. “One driver told us he went to pick up a blanket from home because it’s cold and the other one said he went to his girlfriend, but that is not a good reason to break regulations, so we escorted them back. This is dangerous because we are trying to avoid community transmission,” said Shikongo. He urged truck owners to provide their drivers with all the necessary amenities because in most cases when the police question the drivers, they complain of lack of ablution facilities and food, which forces them to go into the community. Additionally, Shikongo revealed that the police in the Khomas Region arrested and issued fines to 49 people for selling alcohol.
