Erongo Governor Neville Andre says the ocean is about much more than just the fisheries sector, and that it contributes significantly to Namibia's GDP. But, more importantly, people rely on the ocean for food livelihood, transport, and trade. According to the United Nations, the ocean produces at least 50% of the planet's oxygen, is key to the global economy with an estimated 40 million people to be employed by ocean-based industries by 2030, and absorbs about 30% of carbon dioxide produced by humans, buffering the impacts of global warming. This year's theme of World Ocean Day is “Revitalisation: Collective Action for the Ocean”. The aim is to shed light on communities and generate ideas, and solutions working together to protect and revitalise the ocean and everything it sustains.
