The menstrual cycle affects all female athletes differently. Some gain energy, while others feel unwell or tired.

NBC Sport met with Brave Gladiators’ defender Veronica Van Wyk, who spoke about her own experience.

This is Veronica Van Wyk, the Brave Gladiators' defender. She started playing Football when she was ten years old.

Van Wyk, who is also known as Veroo among those in football circles, knows that things in sport are not the same for men and women.

Among the many differences are anatomical, women-specific issues that affect performance on the pitch in a variety of ways.

Van Wyk still remembers how getting her period was a significant occurrence in her sporting career.

The Galz & Goals player added that menstruation impacts individual athletes differently.
She said she is among those who gain more energy and perform better if they are on their cycle.

The 24-year-old has played 19 games for the Junior National teams, and five for the Brave Gladiators.

According to her experience, not everyone is suitable to coach a successful women’s team.
