The construction of a 21-kilometer freeway road between Windhoek and the Hosea Kutako International Airport has commenced and notable progress has been made at the Dordabis interchange.

The project now in its third phase is funded by the Chinese government to the tune of over N$1 billion. 

The construction includes a dual carriage freeway, three interchanges, two bridges, and drainage structures.

During a site visit, the Executive Director of the Works and Transport Ministry Esther Kaapanda touched on how quality road infrastructures contribute to the country's economy and social development.

Over 200 jobs have been created for locals, particularly youth and women.

Kaapanda further noted that road infrastructure of this nature helps facilitate trade and the free movement of goods and people.

"When we have such quality roads in the country, obviously trade is increasing, it also helps the country to attract both domestic and foreign investment."

Chinese Ambassador to Namibia Zhao Welping says China will continue supporting Namibia's infrastructure development agenda.

He also stressed the need to prioritize road infrastructure as part of China and Namibia's future cooperation.

" It's important for the general public to know how big this project is to the local economy and to further improve the local infrastructure and I think for the project to be complete it's very important to gather support from the local society and I hope that our joints efforts will be completed and that all our people here will enjoy the new quality roads."

Despite progress made, challenges such as shortage of water are hampering the completion process. 

The overall progress of the project stands at 15 percent and is expected to be completed next year.
