Road fatalities decreased by 2.2% last year, as reported in the 2022 Road Crush and Claims Report, which was launched in Windhoek by the Motor Vehicle Accident (MVA) Fund.

According to the report, the road fatality rate in 2021 stood at 13.7%, whereas in 2022, it dropped to 11.5%.

More than 4,000 cars were involved in crashes.

Sedans accounted for 47%, while pickups made up 30% of the statistics.

The Chief Executive Officer of MFA Fund, Rosalia Martins-Hausiku, cleared long-distance bus drivers of being the main cause of accidents, saying it was mostly private vehicles.

"Fatalities have declined from 552 to 466.  We see that the injuries have declined from 5442 to 5267, and then we look at the casualties, which also show a decline from 5880 to 5733. And then related claims. When we say MVA Fund claims, these are personal claims that people lodge with the MVA Fund. This does not include claims that would otherwise be submitted to the MVA Fund by service providers. Because now we have components where we pay service providers directly."

Martins-Hausiku stressed that 72% of the crashes were the result of human behaviour.

Hausiku further says the comparison between the years 2021–2022 is that the crashes have increased from 3,048 to 3,072.

The number of people who died in road crashes declined by 21.6% in 2021 from 24.8% in 2019.

The number further declined in 2022, with only 18% fatalities per 100,000 people.
