A 7-year-old grade 1 learner died after he was run over by a minivan at the Otjiwarongo dump site on June 14, 2023.

Otto Ameb’s death was confirmed by Otjozondjupa Regional Community Liaison Officer, Inspector Maureen Mbeha.

According to Mbeha, Ameb was in the company of boys who had jumped onto the Namib Mills minivan that was reversing to offload waste at the refuse area shortly after 11:00. Ameb fell, got trapped under the minivan, and died instantly.

The deceased was a student at Orwetoveni Primary School in the town.

A culpable homicide case has since been registered against the 39-year-old driver.

Four years ago, another minor, aged 11, died in similar circumstances at the dump site.

Petrus Kapuka was run over by the Otjiwarongo Municipality refuse truck after attempting to jump onto it but slipping and falling under the vehicle.
