The Extraordinary SADC Organ Troika Summit, plus the country contributing troops to the SADC peace mission in Mozambique, have considered the security situation in eastern DRC as well as in Mozambique's northern province of Cabo Delgado.
President Hage Geingob, also serving as the chairperson of the SADC Troika, reiterated that the regional bloc has the resolve to safeguard security, safety, and stability within the SADC region.
Over 500 million people have died in the armed conflict in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, while millions have been displaced.
The SADC region has been impacted by the deteriorating situation in the Eastern DRC, considering the hosting of Congolese refugees by member states.
To address the ongoing violent conflict in the Great Lakes country, the Extraordinary Meeting in May, also involving SADC Force Intervention Brigade Troop Contributing Countries, resolved to redouble efforts to restore peace and security and deploy soldiers under SADC command to the troubled region.
The Chairperson of the Organ on Politics, Defence, and Security Cooperation, President Hage Geingob, convened the Virtual Extraordinary Meeting with the countries contributing troops to Mozambique.
The SADC intervention force in the DRC, President Geingob says, will be deployed in September this year as the country prepares for its national elections in December.
"We are cognizant of the fact that a military approach is not the only solution to the situation in eastern DRC."
Another concern was the security situation in Mozambique's Northern Province of Cabo Delgado.
The situation Geingob highlights has been relatively calm and controlled, making it possible for over 420,000 internally displaced people to return to eastern DRC.
Despite its recorded success, the summit has extended the SADC mission in Mozambique.
"To ensure that authorities in Mozambique receive the necessary support before the mission exits, We want to thank all involved for restoring peace and stability in the Northern Province."
The Summit observed a minute of silence and expressed its deep condolences to those who lost their lives in the line of duty and to civilians affected by the conflicts.
