The National Unity Democratic Organisation and Gobabis Residence Association say the Gobabis Municipality is set to lose its electricity distribution license, if dilapidated electrical network is not attended to as a matter of urgency.
This was shared by leaders of both NUDO and GRA at a press conference at Gobabis.
NUDO's Elvire Theron accused the municipality of withholding the services of an electrical consultant engineer.
The consultant was appointed to mantain the aging network, which has now and then been causing several power outages.
Theron says if the municipality fails to maintain the network, it could lose its distribution lisence.
"We demand that the rehabilitation of the electricity network be as matter of urgency, the purpose for the rehabilitation of the electricity network will have the following benefits for Gobabis, Gobabis will be able to maintain the electricity distribution license, have stable electrical network with minimum power outage, technical expertise will be improved and Gobabis Municipality will retain as well as improve our electrical revenue."
The Gobabis Mayor, Melba Tjozongoro acknowledged that if the distribution licensed is revoked, it will affect the town's operations.
Tjozongoro explained that the consultant's work has been halted temporarily to allow the due process to be followed.
"Therefore we know that there are salary to be paid there are other things to be done also and this money is also assisting in those areas but if we re fenced it the electricity network in town it will come first we are going to upgrade anything and then you know that how much of a percentage going to whatever to assist the municipality with and is also from those money if it happens that we lose the license we won't have even few money to service or repair our fleet and all those things that why are so much fighting for this license to remain with us."
The Mayor assured the residents that electricity provision is a priority.
