The Oshakati Town Council will offer 100% interest relief on customer municipal services accounts with outstanding account payments.
Town spokesperson Katarina Kamari said this follows a resolution passed by the Council on August 30, 2023, to waive all interest accumulated on all Oshakati customer municipal service accounts.
According to Kamari, the council’s debts currently stand at N$80,224,301.99.
"The debts are increasing every month due to non-payment," she said.
Kamari said the programme will run for a period of 10 months, effective from September 2023 until June 2024, and no interest will be charged on all municipal accounts.
The decision was taken by the council to encourage all account holders to pay their municipal services and allow all clients with accounts in arrears to be able to pay off their debts.
Kamari noted that the waving of interest on accounts is also applicable to all municipal accounts.
This includes residences, schools, businesses, non-profit organisations, community-based organisations, churches, the government, and parastatal institutions.
Kamari urged residents to honour their municipal accounts as revenue collection allows for development in the town.
