The Namibian Broadcasting Corporation has managed to reduce the pay-as-you-earn debt it owed the taxman to N$178 million, down from N$250 million.

The N$250 million was part of the broadcaster's historical debt, accumulated since 1996.

Director-General Stanley Similo revealed this during the 'Editor-in-Chief Reviews 2023' interview, where he laid bare the finances of the nbc and the overall operations for the year.

The nbc received about N$392 million from the government for the 2023/2024 financial year.

Of this amount, N$310 million was allocated towards the corporation's operational budget and N$82 million towards its development budget, meant for the upgrade of remote rural broadcast networks, dilapidated studios, and equipment.

Similo clarified the broadcaster's financial position in terms of complementing the funds from the government while classified as a non-commercial entity.

The year 2023 saw the nbc as an employer in better shape, which, the Editor in Chief says, has increased the morale of the more than 500 staff members.
