Founded in 2005, the White Ribbon Campaign Namibia is an NGO focused on engaging men and boys to campaign, speak out, and take action to end violence against women and girls.
The campaign raises a symbolic white ribbon as a universal symbol of solidarity and commitment to ending violence against women and girls.
During the campaign, men and boys wear white ribbons as a pledge to protect and speak out.
The campaign aims to teach men and boys to be loving, compassionate, supportive, and consider the meaning of being a real man.
So far, the co-founder and director of the White Ribbon campaign in Namibia, Charles Simakumba, says they have mobilised men to raise awareness on the matter of gender-based violence, educating them on the effects of gender-based violence.
"We also need to reach out to men because we sideline a boy child; if we are not backing them, there will not be progress, so at the same time, we need to inform and educate the boy child about what it means to be a real man."
He says enough is not being done to involve men and boys in the conversation to end the violence.
The campaign, Simakumba says, also provides a safe space for men to open up about their experiences with gender-based violence.
