Four schools in Kavango East's Mukwe Circuit have temporarily suspended classes due to lions roaming the area. 

Classes have been suspended for today and tomorrow; however, teachers and support staff members remain on duty. 

Schools that suspended classes are Kangongo Combined School, Thikanduko Primary School, Mayara Combined School, and Katanga Primary School. 

The education directorate in the Kavango East Region stated that the situation may change at any time based on an update by the Ministry of Environment.

The ministry's spokesperson, Romeo Muyunda, is calling on the inhabitants of Kavango East to be vigilant at all times. 

"The Ministry confirms the sighting of three lions in the Mukwe constituency of the Kavango East Region. The lions were initially observed in the areas of Mayara, Katenture, and Shamangorwa villages. This morning, our staff members who are monitoring and tracking their movements spotted tracks at Mbwata village in Ndiyona Constituency. The indication is that the lions have split, as only two, a male and a female, could be seen. We caution the communities in the nearby areas to be vigilant at all times. Those with livestock are urged to keep them in their kraals at night. The lions are suspected to have come from Bwabwata National Park, and we also suspect that they are headed to Khaudum National Park. Residents around Khaudum National Park are equally requested to be vigilant. Since they were reported on Monday, they (the lions) have caught and killed a calf at Tjova village and a goat at Katenture village. This case will be dealt with in accordance with the policy for human-wildlife conflict management."

He further urges community members to not provoke the lions if they pass without causing a threat.
