Access to markets has been a challenge for many small and medium enterprises (SMEs), and GS1 Namibia is now providing a platform where SMEs can meet buyers.

GS1 Namibia organised one such event, the second of its kind, in Windhoek.

The organiser of the one-day event, Patricia Hangula, says they are planning to have these kinds of platforms as often as possible to ensure that all newcomers in the market get the chance to meet retailers, enabling their businesses to scale and get onto the shelves.

The first "Meet the Buyer" event by GS1 Namibia managed to help several SMEs secure shelf space.

"What we also saw was that, as much as you get them the shelf space, there's still extra work that needs to be done in between, which is beyond our office. But we at least try to get them to the door and see what could happen after that."

She says the success stories from the initial event show that this strategy can yield real results.

She indicates that even if getting them onto the shelf is just the beginning, it's an invaluable step.

Some SMEs that nbc News spoke to stated that the platform has influenced their growth so far and could help refine the process to support more SMEs effectively.
