The Epukiro Post Drive Centenary Celebration Committee has announced the start of the celebration.
This week-long series of events celebrates 100 years since the courageous journey led by Ombara Katookui Hoveka, who guided the Ovambanderu and Ovaherero people from concentration camps to establish a new future in Epukiro.
The celebration is themed "From Despair to Hope: 100 Years of Resilience and Renewal" and honours the enduring legacy of the Epukiro community.
It serves as a reminder of the struggles faced by their ancestors and the resilience that has defined their path.
"It is thus necessary to give you a brief background on how these celebrations came about. As you may be aware, every year in November, the Tjimana Traditional Authority undertakes a pilgrimage to Epukiro to pay homage to its fallen heroes and heroines. A century of history, culture, and perseverance is being recognised through activities aimed at reflecting on shared heritage and the vision that shaped Epukiro," explained event organiser, Himee Kamburona.
Vendors and cultural exhibitors will be setting up throughout the week to highlight the diverse cultural and economic contributions of the people of Epukiro.
"As the festivities continue, the spirit of Ombara Katookui Hoveka's leadership and the legacy of hope he inspired remain central, underscoring the strength and unity of the Epukiro community."
