The informal sector is said to be the backbone of Opuwo's local economy, and it is for this reason that the Opuwo Town Council has vowed to continue supporting it by ensuring that it has proper infrastructure development.

The Council Support Officer at the Opuwo Town Council, Gebhardt Makono, said the local economy of Opuwo has evolved over the years, and it is doing very well.

"As you have seen, the informal sector is the backbone of the Opuwo local economy. We have seen how vibrant it is and how people are trading, and the council has constructed an open market in town that is being upgraded in phases due to financial constraints. only a few traders are currently there."

He added that the local economy, development bank, and environmental health practitioners are collaborating to ensure that the vendors operate in a conducive environment.

"So we are working towards that to improve the environment of our people where they are trading and also to make sure that they have better infrastructure at the open market. We have also constructed a mini slaughterhouse, as currently our vendors are just slaughtering at an open space; hence the council intervened to construct that slaughterhouse and what we are trying to do now is for it to meet the standards that are required by Meatco and the Ministry of Agriculture."

He also noted that the council, with the support of the GIZ and the Ministry of Urban and Rural Development, has constructed a small open market in the Katutura residential area.
