89-year-old Epafras Paulus, well known as Shilumbu Shamu Paulu, was buried at Elim Cemetery in the Omusati Region.

The veteran was among thousands that provided assistance to PLAN combatants within pre-independence Namibia.

Mourners from across the country gathered at his residence at Onashiku village in the Omusati Region to pay tributes to the late Paulus.

He was instrumental in assisting PLAN combatants with transportation, storing their guns, as well as offering them accommodation and food to ensure their safety from the South African colonial forces.

In his message of condolences, President Nangolo Mbumba described Paulus as a fearless party cadre who not only contributed to the struggle for independence but was also a renowned businessman both pre- and post-independence.

Being a businessman, the South African forces noticed his support for the PLAN combatants, and they retaliated by burning down his shop in Omutaku gwaKayupa and threatening his life, forcing him to flee to Windhoek, where he continued his support.

Both founding president Sam Nujoma and former president Hifikepunye Pohamba also praised the late veteran for his contribution.

Shilumbu shamu Paulu is survived by his wife Johana and 18 children.
