Walvis Bay’s third mayor, King Mandume Muatunga, recently opened up about his unforgettable experiences with Namibia’s late founding president, Dr. Sam Nujoma, painting a vivid picture of a leader who shaped not only a nation but also the lives of those who worked alongside him.

Muatunga, who stepped into his role as mayor shortly after Walvis Bay’s official inauguration, spoke fondly of Dr. Nujoma’s mentorship during his early years in leadership. “Dr. Nujoma wasn’t just a president; he was a teacher,” Muatunga shared. “His guidance was invaluable as I navigated the challenges of governance, both locally and nationally.”

Describing Dr. Nujoma as a “true statesman,” Muatunga highlighted the late president’s unwavering commitment to unity and sustainable development. “Every conversation with him was a lesson in wisdom and vision,” he recalled. “He always stressed the importance of building a prosperous Namibia, not just in cities like Walvis Bay but in rural areas as well.”

Muatunga also reflected on the transformative projects initiated under Dr. Nujoma’s leadership, particularly those that elevated Walvis Bay’s status as a key player in Namibia’s economy. From infrastructure upgrades to the port city’s strategic development, Muatunga credited Dr. Nujoma’s foresight for laying the groundwork for growth.

As Namibia continues to build on its post-independence achievements, Muatunga’s reflections serve as a reminder of the enduring impact of Dr. Nujoma’s leadership and the importance of passing on that legacy to future generations.
