Seven people, including a two-month-old baby, escaped with minor to mild injuries when they were involved in a road crash on Windhoek's Independence Avenue during Friday's lunch hour.

Emergency and city police officials say it is alleged that a taxi, travelling north on Independence and carrying five passengers, swerved to avoid schoolchildren who crossed the road and crashed into an oncoming bakkie.

The bakkie was driven by a 40-year-old man, who was accompanied by his 11-year-old son. Both survived the crash with minor injuries.

The baby, mother, and one other passenger in the taxi also had minor injuries, but another woman suffered mild to severe injuries.

Some of the passengers in the taxi were trapped inside the vehicle, and emergency rescuers had to use the jaws of life to remove them.

The road crash attracted a large number of onlookers, and traffic had to be diverted around the scene.
