Erongo Governor Neville Andre has praised the region for emerging, not only as Namibia's economic hub but also the leader in renewable energy initiatives.

Speaking during a recent event held at Swakopmund, Andre emphasised the significant strides made in realising solar energy projects, aimed at reducing the carbon footprint and addressing climate change challenges.

The Erongo Region currently hosts approximately 50 MW of operational solar photovoltaic capacity that contributes directly to the national grid, supplying both NamPower and the Regional Electricity Distributor, Erongo Red.

These advancements represent a dedicated effort to harness abundantly available solar resources.

Highlighting notable projects, Andre introduced the Daures Green Hydrogen Project, which aims to annually produce 18 tonnes of green hydrogen and 100 tonnes of green ammonia.

The initiative includes a 0.88 MW solar PV plant complemented by battery storage, underscoring the region's commitment to innovative energy solutions.

In addition, a Cleanergy Solutions Namibia project involves a solar park spanning 10 hectares, alongside a hydrogen production facility – equipped with a 5 MW electrolyser and a corresponding 5 MW battery system.

The facility is recognised as a first of its kind in Africa, producing hydrogen through direct solar energy conversion and providing public refuelling services.

"Erongo Region is uniquely positioned as a melting pot of industry and resource potential. It is home to significant mining, vibrant fishing industries, and a flourishing tourism sector. As we now embark on our journey towards harnessing green hydrogen, the demand for energy – particularly clean energy – has never been more acute. It is imperative that we foster an energy landscape that not only supports our diverse economic sectors but also aligns with the principles of sustainability and resilience."

Andre pointed out that, besides supporting the national goals for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, the project also empowers local communities by giving them access to clean and sustainable energy sources.

Solar energy, he says, has the potential to propel Namibia towards a greener future, significantly diminishing reliance on fossil fuels.

Andre stressed the urgent need to meet increasing energy demands through a focus on sustainability and resilience.

"Today, as we delve into our discussions, let us consider the integral role of regulatory frameworks in facilitating a just energy transition – one that ensures equity and accessibility for all, leaving no one behind. Together, we must explore opportunities for collaboration, innovation, and investment that will empower our communities and drive the energy revolution needed to secure a sustainable future for all."

Addressing the official opening of the ReRa Annual Conference, Andre urged attendees to consider the importance of robust regulatory frameworks that promote a just and equitable transition of energy sources.

The governor called for collaboration, innovation and investment towards empowering communities and driving the necessary energy revolution to secure a sustainable future.
