Easter remains one of the most significant days on the calendar for Christians across the globe.
Known also as the Holy Week, Easter is the time Christians celebrate Jesus's death and resurrection, symbolising the eternal life granted to all who believe in him.
With the Easter holiday fast approaching, nbc's News in Keetmanshoop reached out to locals to hear what this sacred time means to them.
For many, Easter remains a time of spiritual reflection , while for others, it is a cherished moment reconnecting with family.
Sarafina Hangue, a resident of Keetmanshoop, said, "Easter for me basically just means that we need to reflect back and look at the cross. The cross of hope and restoration and the fact that Christ has died on that cross for all of us and risen. So we are freed from our sins; that is basically what it means to me. And Easter symbolises church – attending all church services with the family and bonding with the family."
"Easter means it is the Holy Week and the crucifixion and resurrection of Christ. So will spend time at church this weekend," says Ali Swartz.
Carien Maree said, "I will go and visit my sister in Bethanie since she is already in her 80s. I believe it is important to spend time with family, especially during this time. Easter is a celebration of Christ, and we should focus on its true meaning rather than get caught up in commercialised festivities with Passover sweets and other material things. Those are just worldly things and money makers."
Reverend Leslie Leukes of Zacharias Thomas Trinity AME Church shared insights on the significance of Easter.
"Easter reflects on the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. We recall in history what happened more than 2000 years ago. And as Christians we celebrated this time, reflecting on what Jesus did for us, his suffering, his pain, the road through which he made a sacrifice for us, giving his life. And for that, we value this period of time. It is a reflection for us. We meditate on the word, we seek God's presence and we pray, especially during this time."
Reverend Leukes encouraged Christians to honour God in his entirety during this sacred time.
He also highlighted some activities planned for the Easter weekend in Keetmanshoop, which include the ecumenical crucifixion service on Friday and resurrection service at the Kronlein graveyard on Sunday.
