Petitions seeking nullification of the Swapo Party Section elections at Grootfontein and Otjiwarongo are now receiving attention from the highest party structures.

In a telephonic interview with nbc News, the Swapo Party Coordinator for the Otjozondjupa Region, Imms Namaseb, said the petitions were triggered by the allegations of irregularities and illegal conduct of an eight-member special task team in the section elections.

Last weekend, the Grootfontein's District Information and Mobilisation Officer, Susan Schwarz, alleged that the task team breached rules and brought in unknown members from other jurisdictions to register, nominate and vote for new section leaders and delegates.

A total of 17 branches there claimed unfair practices and demanded the halting of the elections.

Namaseb indicated that the matter is now with the office of the party president, Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, the Secretary General, Sophia Shaningwa, and the Politburo.

They are expected to meet this week, Thursday, while the regional executive committee will meet on Wednesday with the leaders assigned to the region.

The section elections elect new leaders and delegates to attend the extraordinary conferences, a platform at which candidates to contest in the upcoming by-elections will be elected.

The by-elections are set for 17 June to replace positions left vacant by the Otjiwarongo Constituency Councillor Marlene Mbakera and Grootfontein's Elder Filipe, who are now members of Parliament.
