The recent Nedbank Namibian Newspaper Cup, held in Outjo, left a lasting positive mark on the town's economy and infrastructure—offering both residents and businesses a welcome boost and bringing a wave of positive change to the town, which played host to netball and football teams from 14 regions.
Beyond the electrifying atmosphere at the Outjo Stadium in the Kunene Region, business activity around the venue saw a notable spike.
Stalls mostly operated by local vendors lined the stadium's perimeter, offering goods and food to enthusiastic crowds.
Christoline Gawises, a local businesswoman from Outjo, said business was booming, even if just for a few days.
Brigitte Uris, also a vendor from Outjo, echoed the sentiment, noting that the event provided exposure and much-needed income for small-scale entrepreneurs.
The hospitality sector also felt the positive ripple effect.
With accommodation establishments in Outjo fully booked, some visitors had to seek lodging in nearby towns such as Otjiwarongo.
Russell Bester, an employee at one of the local accommodation facilities, pointed out that the sporting event was good for business and showed what Outjo can offer.
Hosting a tournament of this magnitude not only energizes the local economy but also brings about lasting improvements.
The Outjo Stadium underwent upgrades and renovations in preparation for the event, enhancing the town's sporting infrastructure.
Thanks to these improvements, the same stadium is now set to host the Private Schools' sports events in less than two weeks—cementing Outjo's status as an emerging hub for regional sporting events.
