The Karibib community demands improved safety and security measures, as well as the acceleration of community projects to prevent similar tragedies in the future.

This follows the death of a 16-year-old schoolboy, who was found in a pool of blood with three wounds to his back in the early hours of last Saturday.

The community pointed out that crime hotspots exist in their town, especially in poorly lit areas, and urged the council to consider allocating funds from an emergency budget to expedite safety and security projects in Karibib.

They want the council to install street lights and cameras, which they say are the most important projects at this stage, as the town is growing rapidly due to an influx of job seekers in mining and other business interests.

Community members gathered at the town's municipal offices to hand over a petition to the mayor.
