The Lungu family has announced that the late former Zambian President Edgar Chagwa Lungu will be buried in South Africa, in accordance with the family’s wishes for a private ceremony.

In a statement on behalf of the family, spokesperson Makebi Zulu described this period as deeply emotional and expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support and condolences received from across the continent and around the world.

Zulu also extended appreciation to the South African government for their respectful support and for honouring the family’s decision to hold a private funeral and burial in South Africa.

"Your non-interference and respect for the South African Constitution, the rights of the family, and their wishes are commendable. This respect will allow us to mourn and celebrate the life of our beloved Edgar Chagwa Lungu with dignity and peace," the statement read.

Additionally, Zulu commended South African Minister for International Relations Ronald Lamola for visiting the family to convey condolences on behalf of President Cyril Ramaphosa.

He further emphasised that the Lungu family continues to seek peace and unity among fellow Zambians during this difficult time and thanked friends, supporters, and the public for their understanding, compassion, and willingness to mourn the former head of state. As resolved by the family, the burial will take place privately in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Details regarding the funeral arrangements and burial will be shared with the public in due course.

On Thursday, Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema announced the indefinite cancellation of the mourning period that had been declared in Lungu’s honour, noting that the country cannot mourn indefinitely. The mourning period was initially set to run until Monday, 23rd June 2025.

Dr. Edgar Lungu passed away in South Africa on 5th June 2025.
