Namibia Desert Diamonds (Namdia) has moved its operations from the building where diamonds worth millions were stolen, citing security concerns.
This was revealed by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Industrialisation, Mines and Energy, Natangue Ithete, while responding to questions in the National Assembly from PDM Leader McHenry Venaani.
Ithete said changing leadership every time a crime occurs is not a sustainable solution.
"I am saying this, it does not work if crime happens at any institution, it’s not proper to change the leadership all the time. Now must we change the board? I am not saying we are not going to change and I am also not saying we will change because something has happened. That cannot be merit," he said.
Venaani questioned why the current board was retained despite security lapses and stressed the importance of accountability.
"When there are allegations, there would be conflict of interest. There is already two senior staff, the former CEO and Chief Operating Officer, who have recused themselves. They are not found guilty or charged with anything, they have recused themselves in order to make the investigation thorough without any people involvement. Now the board is continuing with lapses of security and they have taken decisions, and you are saying they will not change for anything, so I am very worried as a citizen. The board needs to restrict itself," he said.
The Namdia heist remains under police investigation.
