Today, African Union member states observe African Anti-Corruption Day, an annual event dedicated to raising awareness about corruption across the continent.
In Namibia, Acting Director General of Anti-Corruption Namibia, Erna van der Merwe, highlighted the 2025 theme, Promoting Human Dignity in the Fight Against Corruption, during the launch of the Anti-Corruption Educational Media Campaign.
Van der Merwe emphasised the importance of understanding the harmful effects and risks associated with corruption in both public and private institutions.
“As we observe and commemorate African Anti-Corruption Day, let us take a moment to reflect on its significance,” she said. “The theme for 2025 emphasises the necessity of promoting human dignity as we combat corruption.”
She further noted that the African Union Convention on Preventing and Combating Corruption underscores fundamental values such as human rights, the rule of law, and transparency—all essential to human dignity.
“The theme Promoting Human Dignity in the Fight Against Corruption is not just a motto; it is a human-centred imperative,” van der Merwe added. “It calls upon us all to act with respect for the rights and dignity of all.”
The Anti-Corruption Educational Media Campaign, which is in partnership with the Namibian Broadcasting Corporation, aims to deepen public understanding of corruption’s impact and encourage active participation in its prevention.
