Eswatini's former Deputy Prime Minister, Themba Masuku, will lead the SADC Electoral Observation Mission (SEOM) to Malawi for its elections slated for September 16th.
Masuku was appointed by Eswatini's King Mswati III, who is the incoming chair of the SADC Organ on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation.
In a statement, Eswatini's Foreign Ministry said Masuku's appointment affirms dedication to strengthening regional cooperation and advancing the Kingdom's leadership in multilateral initiatives which foster unity.
“Masuku’s extensive experience in governance, diplomacy and public administration uniquely positions him to guide the SEOM in fulfilling its mandate during this pivotal electoral process,” reads the statement.
Malawi, which currently chairs the SADC Organ, Tanzania and Seychelles will all hold their general elections in the next two months.
The SADC Electoral Observation Mission is expected to ensure that the electoral processes are in alignment with the SADC Principles and Guidelines governing democratic elections, such as transparency, credibility and fairness.
