The Oshana Boxing Federation is set to host the regional Amateur Boxing Championships this week. The tournament will serve as a crucial part of the selection process for the upcoming National Championships, which are scheduled for next month in the Kunene Region.
All registered boxing clubs in the Oshana Region have been invited to bring their boxers to compete and vie for a spot on the regional team.
Despite the importance of the event, some promoters have expressed disappointment with the timing. Joseph Benhard, a former Olympian boxer and founder of the Kilimanjaro Boxing Club, voiced his frustration over the short notice.
"We were told at such short notice that the championship event should be done," Benhard said. "I think the Namibian Boxing Federation has to do better than this because it's always the same thing. There's no championship which is organized on time, at least two months before the event, so that we as coaches and promoters know that there's an important event coming up."
Hedison Nghipondoka, promoter and founder of the Bulelo Boxing Academy, highlighted the significance of the championship.
"This is a very paramount, significant, and vital championship whereby we are selecting the amateur champions for Oshana who are going to represent the entire Oshana region in the championships that are likely to take place in Kunene in October," Nghipondoka stated.
The Oshana Regional Boxing Championships are scheduled to take place at 17:00 this afternoon at the Oshakati Independence Stadium.
