In a move to improve the welfare of educators, the Ohangwena Regional Governor, Kadiva Hamutumwa, handed over the construction site for a new teacher's accommodation facility at Helao Nafidi Combined School in the Okongo Constituency.
The project is estimated to cost N$1.4 million.
This initiative was made possible by the office of the Governor in collaboration with development partners from Botswana with the aim to enhance learning and teaching conditions.
"Because if a teacher is not well taken care of, they will not be able to teach very well. The office of the governor, through strategic partnership, will be constructing an 8-bedroom facility for our teachers, and once this is done, it will then be handed over to the ministry of education, particularly the directorate of education in the Ohangwena region," remarked Kadiva.
The new accommodation is expected to ease housing challenges faced by teachers posted to remote areas.
Ohangwena Regional Director Isak Hamatwi expressed gratitude, saying the development will attract and retain qualified educators, ultimately benefiting learners in the region.
In addition, Hamatwi informed the school management that the school will receive a grade 10 and a 4-classroom structure next year.
"Because of the commitment of our honourable governor to ensure that at least the living conditions of teachers are improved, we are happy about that honourable governor. The grade 10 that we are constructing here will come with its 4-classroom block," added Hamatwi.
Construction is set to begin immediately, with completion targeted within three weeks.
Meanwhile, Hamutumwa officially commissioned the rehabilitation of the ancient earth dam in Oshikunde Constituency to improve water storage capacity, support livestock farming, and provide a more sustainable water source, especially during dry seasons.
"Oshikunde is facing the shortage of potable water, and I realised that the earth dam will be able to cater for people and animals. This earth dam is yours; you will be the one to use it and animals in this constituency."
