The Bachmus Coastal Marathon draws a record number of participants this weekend, as hundreds of runners take to the route between Swakopmund and Walvis Bay in what is described as one of the most successful editions of the event.
The marathon, which attracts both professional athletes and first-time participants, is hailed as a major success by runners who spoke to NBC Sport News after the race.
Despite the challenging conditions, especially within the first five kilometers, runners express pride in their performances and the overall organization of the event. For others, the marathon is a personal milestone. "I just did my first ever 42 km run from Swakopmund to Walvis Bay. What an experience! It was a good race, and I maintained the pace I wanted. Running with the desert on one side and the ocean on the other was incredible. I'll definitely come back next year."
Another runner noted: "The race was okay, but the first 5 km were hills. But after the police station, everything was smooth. We made it through, and we are going to Two Oceans!"
A third participant shared: "It was a piece of cake, although the first 5 km weren't easy. Around the 10 km mark, I started getting my rhythm back. It was a good, official personal challenge. One hour and 46 minutes is okay, and I'm proud."
Another participant described their satisfaction after crossing the finish line. "It was difficult, but we performed very well. Everyone was complaining about the first 5 km, but we conquered them. Our five athletes in the 42 km category all did exceptionally well and qualified for the Comrades and Two Oceans Marathon." Others viewed the marathon as a personal challenge worth taking on. "42 km, done and dusted! Everything was great. Thank you so much."
The Bachmus Coastal Marathon continues to grow in popularity each year, showcasing not only Namibia's athletic talent but also the stunning coastal beauty.
