Former Namibian Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) employee John Nashongo has traded the editing booth for the orchard, leaving behind more than a decade of experience in media to pursue his childhood dream of growing fruit trees in the Kavango West Region.
Nashongo (44) has fully embraced his dream, stepping away from the NBC after serving for 15 years.
He said his years in broadcasting never dimmed his passion for agriculture, which he had carried since childhood.
Nashongo explained how his mango-growing project came to life. "My family, particularly my foster mother, established what is known as an environmental trust to support individuals growing trees or managing farms."
Looking ahead, Nashongo believes growing fruit trees is one of the most sustainable ventures anyone can pursue.
With 800 mango trees already established on the plantation, Nashongo aims to expand by adding a variety of other fruit trees.
He also dreams of one day setting up a Kavango West-based juice production factory in Nkurenkuru.
"I would like more trees, not just mangoes, but more juice-producing trees, like oranges and lemons, and yeah, and eventually team up with Vinnie for us to get the juice company going in Nkurenkuru. I believe that this area here is the food basket of Namibia."
