The NBC News team in Keetmanshoop spoke to families enjoying Family Day at local recreational facilities, where they gathered for outdoor activities and quality time together.

Gabriel Jacobs, a Keetmanshoop resident, explained what makes the day special: "We enjoy Family Day because it's a very important gathering for families. We're quite a large family, as you can see. We came from far away to enjoy the day together. What makes it so special is being here in the outback, where nature speaks to us. We're so pleased everything is okay, and everyone's happy."

Elzaan Richter from Windhoek described their family traditions: "Families differ from our households. We tend to celebrate Christmas in different places each year—whether on the farm or here. We try to make it as enjoyable as possible. We're here together to celebrate as a family, even though we were together yesterday. Today, we're just having fun in the water."

The families emphasised that family forms the foundation of identity and belonging, and time together shouldn't be limited to one day.

Eugenie Roinasie, another Keetmanshoop resident, said, "Family is very important. It's the people you come from—the people who define who you are. That's why it's crucial to spend time with family. Families shouldn't only gather on Family Day; they should spend time together every day. Nowadays, families drift apart, so we must always connect with our roots."

Richter added a spiritual perspective: "Family is a gift from God. He brings us together in love and unity so we can thank Him for each other. We've lost loved ones this year, so this is a beautiful experience to appreciate one another."

As families continued enjoying each other's company, many agreed the time spent together matters most.
