Flood victims of Tuesday's disaster in Zambia's Lundazi District of Eastern Province are in dire need of safe water after the water treatment plant got submerged by the same overflow.

The Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU) toured Lundazi District to assess the extent of the damage caused by Tuesday's floods.

The floods have left hundreds homeless, with some houses completely destroyed.

The DMMU has established that, in addition to lacking food and shelter, the victims also have no access to safe water.

This is because the only treatment plant in the area also got submerged, forcing the water utility company to shut it down.

The extensive damage to the bridges has left motorists and pedestrians trapped on either side.

Emergency teams, including the Zambia Defence Force's National Service, are on the ground to mitigate the situation.
