Former DTA Member of Parliament Geoffrey Mwilima has died at the age of 70.

According to the family spokesperson, Dr. Cedric Limbo, Mwilima died in a Windhoek hospital today.

He was admitted on Friday for cardiac-related issues and was awaiting an operation today, but died from complications before the procedure could be done. Limbo further stated that the complications were believed to be a result of years of chronic kidney disease, for which Mwilima had been on dialysis for almost five years.

Mwilima was released from prison on 24 December 2025 after being granted remission of sentence by the Namibia Correctional Service.

He had been convicted of high treason in 2015 for his involvement in the armed secessionist attacks on the government in the then Caprivi Region, now known as the Zambezi Region. At the time of his arrest in 1999, Mwilima was 43 years old. He was sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment following a guilty verdict.

Corrections officials confirmed at the time of his release that he had been granted remission, a legal provision that allows for the reduction of a sentence based on factors such as good behaviour. As a result, he served 10 years in custody and was to serve the remaining five years under supervised conditions.

These conditions included refraining from any involvement in acts related to treason and seeking permission from the Namibia Correctional Service before travelling.
