A forensic audit conducted by an independent firm on behalf of the Botswana government has established that at least money equivalent to N$38.6 billion has been lost through corruption between 2014 and 2024.

Conducted by Alvarez and Marsal Middle East Limited, the audit scrutinised 30 government entities, including regulatory bodies.

The minister for State President, Defense and Security, Moeti Mohwasa, recently told journalists in Gaborone that a network of senior government officials colluded with private contractors to leak N$38.6 billion.

Mohwasa said some of the leaked funds were either invested or stashed in Namibia, South Africa and Zimbabwe, where the beneficiaries are seemingly operating businesses there.

"Suspected cases of corruption, fraud, embezzlement and misconduct identified through this process will now be referred to the appropriate investigative and prosecutorial authorities for due process in accordance with the law. Government will therefore proceed in two parallel checks where all matters suggesting potential criminality of misconduct will be subjected to further investigation and verification and subsequently prosecution."

The 2025 Corruption Perceptions Index ranked Botswana in position 20 out of the 178 countries.
