The Director of Education in the Ohangwena Region, Isak Hamatwi, has urged learners to take their studies seriously.
Hamatwi was speaking at the renaming of Twaalulilwa Junior Primary School to Reverend Selma Kawiiwa Primary School in the Ohangwena Region.
The school was established about 71 years ago with five learners.
Former principal at Twaalilulwa Junior Primary School, Isak Hamatwi, said, "In 1975, it was tragically destroyed by South African soldiers during the liberation struggle. After independence, the community re-established the school, reopening its doors in 2002 with only Grade 1 and Grade 2 classes. It was then named Twaalulilwa, meaning "what was taken from us has now returned".
Today, the school has been renamed in honour of its fourth principal, Selma Kawiiwa.
Hamatwi said the renaming ceremony marks a new chapter for the school as the community continues to strive for better facilities and quality education for its children.
"The government has ensured that there is peace in the country and there are schools in the country for you to be able to study. I wish you all the best and I wish you God's blessing so that you can school and uphold that name by performing very well" Said Isak Hamatwi
The former principal, Selma Kawiiwa, encouraged learners to maintain discipline.
"Today is not just about changing a name on a building. It is about celebrating what education represents: knowledge, discipline, integrity, service, and hope. It is about inspiring the younger generation to contribute positively to society. "
The school currently has 538 learners and 19 staff members.
Nine classes, ranging from Grades 3 to 7, are still conducted under makeshift shelters and tents, while the school relies on a single pit latrine for sanitation.
