The Namibia Youth Volleyball Festival took place at the MTC Dome in Swakopmund, bringing together young volleyball players from across the country to compete in various age categories

In an interview with NBC Sport News, Festival Director Joel Matheus noted that the tournament features both boys' and girls' teams in the Under-13, Under-15, Under-17, Under-19 and Under-21 divisions, competing for trophies, medals and cash prizes, while showcasing their talent and passion for the sport

Matheus said the event plays a crucial role in youth development, providing young athletes a platform to compete and learn from one another.

"This tournament has a very huge impact on the youth in the country. It creates an opportunity for young people to participate in volleyball and engage with one another in a positive environment. I believe this tournament has a huge impact on the future of volleyball in Namibia because it helps create the next generation of players.”

According to him, the festival has grown since its inception and has attracted interest from schools and clubs across the country.

This year's edition has recorded a rise in participation compared to previous years and includes a new age category, he says.

” Last year we had 33 teams, and this year we have 37 teams, which is a huge improvement. We have also introduced the Under-21 category to ensure more young players can participate. We are calling on corporate sponsors to come on board and support the tournament so that more teams from across the country can take part in future.”

Matheus said organisers are optimistic that participation will continue to increase in the coming years, and hopes for more than 50 teams as the tournament strengthens youth volleyball development in Namibia.
