Thousands of people braved the low temperatures on Saturday to take part in a new edition of the traditional Strait of Magellan Plunge, one of the most emblematic events of the Punta Arenas Winter Festival.

Footage shows participants gathered on the beach before throwing themselves into the icy waters, cheered on by spectators in a lively, festive atmosphere.

Families and visitors alike took part in the thrilling activity, dancing along the shore as they waved flags and snapped photos.

To safeguard the safety of attendees, a large operation was deployed that included two rubber boats with rescue swimmers from the Southern Naval Air Group and Maritime Police patrols distributed along the coastline and in the Strait of Magellan, covering the different zones designated for the activity.

The Strait Plunge was first introduced in 2008 with just 16 participants, and, since then, it has become one of the most popular activities of the Punta Arenas Winter Festival, attracting thousands of people every year.
