Volunteers of the ||Kharas Youth Desk have launched their first awareness week in Keetmanshoop, running between today and Friday.

The ||Kharas Youth Desk Coordinator Reymond Freyer told the NBC News the event seeks to promote upcoming initiatives like the career fair, sports wellness day, and agricultural expo.

Freyer said the three-day event aims to boost registration and motivate more young people to get involved in the Youth Desk in order to benefit from personal growth, skills development and community involvement opportunities.

"We are planning a career day for students that are currently in tertiary institutions as well. We are planning a sports-wellness day, which will focus a lot on health and wellness within the youth, and this will be promoted through sports. The third event we will be hosting is the agricultural expo, especially where we encourage youth to come and exhibit their products and to learn from others. We have managed to reintroduce the number of learners that dropped out of school back into high school, and also we have secured internship positions for a number of students that have studied in certain fields, and we are continuing to assist other unemployed youth to start their own SMEs and also to take part in their projects that the youth desk is running."

Awareness week activities will be held at various locations across Keetmanshoop, including informal settlements, to reach as many young people as possible.

The Youth Desk currently has 140 volunteers, most of whom are unemployed youth, as well as more than 200 school learners, mainly from grade 11 and Advanced Subsidiary (AS).
