Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa paid tribute to the country's liberation fighters on Monday as Zimbabwe marked its 46th National Heroes' Day in Harare under the theme "Lest We Forget".

"Today, we collectively reflect on the sacrifices made by our departed and the living brave sons and daughters of the soil who selflessly dedicated their lives in service for our beloved motherland, Zimbabwe," Mnangagwa told the gathering at the National Heroes Acre."

He said this year's theme was a reminder of the responsibility to safeguard the country's independence and sovereignty.

"Freedom, independence and sovereignty are not free but require ongoing care, vigilance, and diligent stewardship." 

More than 50,000 liberation war veterans are set to receive Independence medals recognising their role in Zimbabwe's liberation struggle.

"I would like to thank veterans of the armed liberation struggle. To them and those that have departed, the nation is forever indebted and grateful."

Zimbabwe gained independence from British colonial rule in 1980 following a prolonged liberation struggle. National Heroes Day, observed on the second Monday of August, honours those who contributed to the country's independence.
