Alfeus Benjamin's new leadership role follows years of involvement in sport as an athlete, footballer, coach, administrator and sports development practitioner.
Benjamin grew up in Tsumeb, where he competed in football and athletics, including high jump.
His sporting career continued at the University of Namibia, where he played for the academy team and became its first captain to lead the team on an international tour.
"I am a teacher by profession. I grew up in Tsumeb, where I played sport at school level, mostly football and athletics. I was a high jump athlete. Then I went to the University of Namibia, where I played football for the academy team. I was the first captain of the team that went abroad to play against Zimbabwe and Botswana."
After graduating as a teacher, Benjamin returned to Tsumeb, where he coached football and assisted local clubs.
His involvement later moved into football administration, including a stint as president of Chief Santos and work as a football director and co-coach during the club's Premier League campaign.
He also worked in education and local government while remaining involved in municipal sport and competitions across Southern Africa.
For the past seven years, Benjamin has served as CEO of Soccer Moon, where he has focused on using sport and events to support town development.
Benjamin now takes over as interim chairman from Cilas Wilder, who previously served as chairperson of the Namibia Sports Commission.
"Sport and event management is a core development pillar for us, where, with other stakeholders, we are developing sport in the sense of creating sports facilities around town, but also through an events management programme. We believe that especially sport is an economic sector on its own and it contributes to the development of the town."
Benjamin said his experience in competition, coaching, football administration and sports development will inform his approach to the interim chairmanship.
His appointment comes as the Namibia Sports Commission continues its role in developing sport and coordinating with stakeholders on facilities, events and athlete development.
